Project Need
The problem was identified simply by seeing that the school had little to no recycling bins and the few that were on campus were being misused, we noticed a lot of trash was thrown in them and we did not know if things were being divided and properly disposed of. The team has worked towards solving the problem of trash going into the wrong bins by informing the school community about the outcome of improperly disposing of recyclable items. This was done via email, events, Instagram, and school-wide announcements. This is aligned with our impact area of civic engagement because we informed the community about the politics in environmental issues in their city, volunteered at events that help out the community, and by working closely to keep track of the progress throughout the year. Students kept track of the pounds that were recycled by going to the recycling center across the street biweekly and sorting the aluminum and the plastics. They wanted to do this to ensure that the plastic bottles were properly disposed of and to keep track of the amount of impact they made on their campus.
During our third year of the challenge the group decided to do different things with the same goal in mind of promoting sustainability and making our community aware of changes they can make in their life to be more sustainable. Many members of our community are not aware about ways they can take action to be more sustainable so the students decided to make lesson plans, plan out a beach clean up, go to the farm, all while educating themselves and their community members about the impacts of making better choices for our environment.
